Sunday Times Festival of Education

Sunday Times Festival of Education

We are delighted to be returning to The Sunday Times, Festival of Education this year on Saturday 22nd June.

Our specialists David Birch and Steve Hoggins will be running a workshop for parents, teachers and for any interested parties at 9.10am and 2.50pm in the Mandarin Room.

 ‘Dad, who am I?’

Philosophy: learning how to speak when you are lost for words

For both parents and teachers, sometimes the hardest thing to say to your children is, ‘I don’t know.’ Philosophy gets round the problem of insatiable questioning by replying, ‘Well what do you think?’ This workshop will look at how philosophy can be used to offer a fresh approach to education, an approach based on listening rather than teaching. Whether it’s at home or in the classroom, philosophy can nurture the endless incredulity of children and turn mutual ignorance into a conversation.

About the workshop leaders

David is an author and educator. He teaches philosophy in primary and secondary schools throughout London for The Philosophy Foundation. He wrote many contributions to the award-winning book The Philosophy Shop, and his new book Provocations: Philosophy for Secondary School is due for release next year by Crown House Publishing.

Steve is a trained primary school teacher and Development Director of The Philosophy Foundation. He has taught all ages from pre-school children to grown-up children for over 10 years. He particularly enjoys discovering philosophy in children's picture books.

The If Odyssey

Peter Worley, our chief executive and co-founder, has written an article for the Guardian, discussing the positive impact of telling ancient stories in the modern classroom, and why he's incorporated them into our new book, The If Odyssey:

How to use the enduring power of Greek myths in your classroom

"Homer's story of Odysseus' struggle to get home from Troy, The Odyssey (which dates from at least the 8th century BC), was used in the ancient world for moral instruction. But I find that the stories lend themselves better to critical and philosophical thinking...

Working with children and Greek culture like this has also made me think more about the nature of stories, why they are important to us, how to work with them. Storytelling creates a direct line of communication between the teacher and their pupils..."

The article is a great example of how - and why - we do what we do, bringing philosophy into the classroom and the wider community to develop critical and creative thinking.

How The Light Gets In

How The Light Gets In

The If Machine talk by Peter Worley at How The Light Gets In this year can be seen on the Institute of Art and Ideas website:

http://iai.tv/video/the-if-machine

In this talk Peter introduced the audience to an example of the sort of session to be found in The If Machine as well as some of the facilitation techniques described in the book, such as 'if-ing, anchoring and opening up', 'thinking avenues' and dialogic discussions. He wanted the audience to experience a session so that they were not simply receiving a report of how philosophy is done with children but seeing it from the inside. So, if you watch the talk you will see a discussion on a philosophical thought experiment, a discussion about the discussion on the philosophical thought experiment, and by watching it you will also engage in a further discussion of your own, on the discussion on the thought experiment and on the discussion on the discussion on the thought experiment. If you can follow that then you need to tune in to find out more. And if you can't you need to tune in to find out more!
